I agree with the part about kids. But face it for many urban and suburban children the opportunities for the kind of outdoor activities that I enjoyed as a child are more and more limited. Today parents also feel more comfortable with supervised group activities than letting their children wander off outside to do their own thing.
Another change is the fact that in many rural areas "no hunting signs" are everywhere. Even "no fishing". I've replaced hunting birds with a gun with using a camera. It's more low key but just as much fun.
